Grants for 2018-2019

Cross District Grants

WeDo-LEGO Robotics - LEGO Robotics will be part of the PTO organized Enrichment Programs for all four Bristol Warren Elementary Schools this coming school year. Working in pairs, students will use Lego bricks and motor modules to build models that can be moved or activated through basic coding software. Students will collaborate to problem-solve as they combine science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as learning basic coding skills.

Responsive Classroom Training, Rockwell and Guiteras- With the conclusion of responsive classroom training for Rockwell and Guiteras, all elementary schools in the district will have completed this comprehensive training. Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management and developmental awareness. The core belief of the program is that in order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies- cooperation, assertiveness responsibility, empathy and self-control-and a set of academic competencies-academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies and academic behaviors.

Colt Andrews School

Writer in Residence-Julia Cook - Award winning children's author, counselor and parenting expert Julia Cook will work with students on social and writing skills. She will lead professional development trainings for teachers and mental health staff, as well as workshops and consultations for parents. Julia Cook will use her collection of books to facilitate learning on the topics of tattling, bullying, personal space, video game addiction, accepting feedback, interrupting, divorce, anger, personal safety and more.

One School, One Book- This program is a family involvement initiative that continues to grow and now exists in many schools throughout the United States. One School, One Book offers students, families, teachers and administrators the unifying experience of reading, discussing, and celebrating the same book . The novel selected will address bullying and the safe, responsible ways to report it, bringing the entire school community together to 'Take a Stand'.

2nd Grade cohort home-based math games- This project fosters family unity while strengthening and reinforcing math fluency skills with math games. The goal of the project is to provide a home resource that will increase second grade proficiency in the area of addition and subtraction.

Guiteras School

Writer in Residence- Julia Cook- Award winning children's author, counselor and parenting expert Julia Cook will work with students on social and writing skills. Harvest Outdoor Learning- This program will utilize the Guiteras Discovery Garden, a unique outdoor learning environment, to spur professional development for teachers in order to bring engaging and hands-on learning activities to the students. Outdoor Education Consultant Kristen Metz will be working with teachers on how enhance their educational goals through outdoor teaching.

Link-up with the RI Philharmonic- This project will allow the fourth grade music students to participate in the RI Philharmonic Link Up program, which is based on a curriculum developed at The Weill Music Institute of Carnegie Hall. This fantastic curriculum allows students to learn to play the recorder. Students will play and sing along to a program of diverse musical selections which will be performed at a culminating concert. Students will also experience a mini-workshop taught by a Philharmonic musician.

Ad Savvy Kids- The Ad Savvy Workshop and Board Games will allow students to think critically about media messages and gain experience in deconstructing advertisements, examining why advertisements are made and how they are used in media. Through class discussions and creating digital media artifacts and print artifacts, students will practice identifying and using some of the persuasive techniques that are used in advertising to influence consumer behavior.

Hugh Cole School

Storyteller in Residence- Bill Harley, Phase 2- This project will teach students to incorporate voice into their writing. By working with master storyteller and writer Bill Harley, students will have a unique opportunity to learn about the craft of writing. Students will examine how stories work in people's lives, what stories may define their own lives, and how to translate these stories onto the page with warmth, humor, and honesty. This program also includes school/ performances by Bill Harley and professional development for teachers.

Noetic Learning Math Contest- The Noetic Learning Math Contest is a semiannual problem solving contest for grades 2-8. This grant program provides students with the opportunity to participate in the contest and also brings the Challenge Math program to the school. The Challenge Math program hones problem solving skills and logical reasoning skills, utilizing non-routine and challenging word problems. This grant program aims to cultivate a positive math mindset through challenging math exploration.

Kickemuit Middle School

Nature's Classroom- Nature's Classroom is a unique and amazing environmental residential education program designed to support and supplement traditional classroom learning by teaching creative and practical applications for subjects such as math, social studies, and science. Over several days, seventh graders engage in activities promoting science, math, social studies, nature, teamwork, and self-awareness, throughout this bonding experience away from home.

Beginning Band- Professional musicians will provide small group/individualized instruction to sixth grade band students to ensure that every child has the support needed to succeed. This program will assess the individual needs of students and will provide small group and specific instruction to allow for better student learning and success.

Generation Citizen- Generation Citizen uses action civics education to help young people recognize their critical role in our democracy. The program trains school teachers to lead an in-school action civics course using an innovative student-centered, project-based approach. The lessons in the curriculum provide students with the civic knowledge, skills, and disposition to promote long-term civic engagement.

Science Olympiad- The goal of the Science Olympiad club/team at KMS is to increase interest in science and engineering. The objective is to involve students in active, hands-on learning and develop problem solving, time management, and study skills. The cognitive skills learned in this team exercise can be applied to many other areas of a student's life.


Mt. Hope High School

Freshman Summer Bridge Program- This collaborative vision between KMS and MHHS provides social and emotional support to incoming ninth graders in need of extra guidance. Students will develop organizational skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging, allowing a successful transition from middle to high school.

RISD Museum Trip- French students will visit the RISD museum to learn about and experience first hand the Impressionist school of painting. Students will study art related French vocabulary and expressions, the historical context of the 19th Century and Romanticism, and aspects of analyzing and evaluating works of art. Student presentations on various works housed at the museum will be the culmination of this exciting program.


Rockwell School

Audubon Science Collaboration- This project would provide an opportunity for students to participate in five (one hour) hands on science lessons in the classroom provided by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Each lesson is aligned with specific content standards from the district science curriculum. This project will complement and enrich the existing curricula by allowing students to participate in more meaningful experiences to increase their understanding of specific district science content standards.

Performing Arts (Trinity Repertory) - Using materials provided by Trinity Repertory Theater Company, students engage in investigating dramatic enactments using dialogue from 'A Christmas Carol.' After extensive, integrated classroom activities, students travel to Trinity Rep to view a live performance.

Art Docent Program – The art docent program uses works of art to promote interdisciplinary and multicultural connections through direct experiences in creative expression. Parents and members of the community bring their unique expertise and vision to this art appreciation experience.

Spanish Language Enrichment – This Spanish Language Enrichment Program provides opportunities in grade 1 - 5 that engage students in reaching higher levels of social, emotional, and academic achievement. Learning a second language can be an enriching experience for children, and create greater cultural sensitivity.
